Papers, 1832-1940.

The papers consist primarily of materials relating to Robert Benjamin Kyle and his grandson, Robert Bartlett Kyle, Jr. Robert Kyle's papers consist of bills of sale of land and slaves, records kept while he was the quartermaster of the 31st Ala. Inf. during the Civil War and records relating to his various business activities following the war including the Kyle Lumber Company, the Gadsden Metallic Paint Company, the Elliot Car Company and the Gadsden Interstate Land Company. There is also a war time photograph of him. Robert B. Kyle's, Jr. papers consist of school papers and materials that document his role during WWI as part of the American Expeditionary Force. His papers also include an invitation to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration in 1937 and a number of WWI era photographs as well as photographs of Ala. Governor Bibb Graves during his second term.

Robert Benjamin (R.B.) Kyle was born 1826, May 24 at Leaksville, N.C. His father, James Kyle, died at Leaksville in 1836. In 1845, R. B. Kyle was hired as a clerk in the dry goods store of J. and J. Kyle and one year later was made a partner. In 1850 R. B. Kyle sold his interest and entered the wholesale grocery business under the firm of Grimes, Kyle and Thornton. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James (lawyer, financier) and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt. He married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, 1905, and had six children: Anna, James, Franklin, Elliott, Franklin Jr., John.
